Welcome!  If broadcast history is your hobby, passion, or just today's matter of interest, we are glad you are here! Oldradio.com's mission is to find and share information about the pioneer broadcast radio stations and current industry issues, as well as links and references to other locations containing accurate materials on broadcasting. The emphasis is on professional broadcasting, but we can "wander" a bit from time to time. The goal is to shed light on your questions, and clear up some myths.

You are also invited to participate in a a mailing list devoted to broadcasting. You may sign up for it at: http://lists.radiolists.net/mailman/listinfo/broadcast/   And, if you can help with some information, pictures, etc, to fill in something we are missing, that would be great.  Other lists are at www.radiolists.net

What's NEW on the site?

Spring 2008 - Don't forget the NAB Show. Our Lunch Gathering will be on
                        Tuesday as usual.  info here

We are happy that our "regular" sponsors are again helping us
with the logistics of the Lunch.

Winter 2008 - We are starting to update some of the city pages, with the help

of some nice folks, including Jeffrey Bottalico. If you have some
                        information to share, please do.

If all goes well, some of the transmitter and console pictures
will start appearing soon. We are also looking for stories ...
how you felt about the gear while you were using it.  Let us know!

April 2007 - We have updated the RCA 50 kW and Harris 5 kW pages, among
others.  Also, there are some additional pages on the clear channel stations.

Summer 2006 - Many folks have enquired about the availability of old manuals,
spec sheets, etc. Sometimes they are looking for history,
sometimes they want to rebuild an old console or some other
piece of gear - and sometimes the HAVE to repair something
                          STILL IN SERVICE!

Can you help?  If you have any old manuals you would like to
share, please do send us scans, pdfs, or even the manuals,
so we can share them with others.  The BDR is partially being
re-arranged to have more manuals available, as is Harold
Hallikainen's site (if you have Internet access when you need
                          a manual).

June 2006 - We continue to work on the Clear Channel (now known as Class A) stations.
Look on the "stations and station history" page, about six new
ones have gone in over the past month or so.
Some more pix have arrived and some histories. Can you help?

December 19, 2004 - A small plane hits and destroys KFI's tower. Pictures from the scene.

Fall 2004 - The KFI page is up, along with some great stories by Newcomb Weisenberger
about his years as a transmitter engineer for the station.
(Sadly, as noted above, the KFI tower is down.)

What is your favorite I-A or I-B (old style) channel?
If you can, please share some information, pictures, memories with us!

Our listings of the Tucson folks' "Where are they now?
                               recently have been expanded.

April 2004 - The Clear Channel page has been updated, and a great pictorial tour of
KRLA, Pasadena added with the help of Marvin Collins, Harvey Smith,
Ted Shireman, Bill Earl, Earl Arbuckle, and Newcomb Weisenberger.

You can help us: Oldradio.com is essentially a labor of love. Occasionally a kind company supports us in some way. (I hope you will spend a moment to click on their banner and check them out). But mostly we depend on your help. If you have some history, or pictures, please share them with us.

Financial support: As mentioned, oldradio.com is essentially a non-commercial site. We do not want to have any subscriptions or fees. But, if you want to donate some small amount of money to "the cause," please don't let me stop you! Click on www.radio-guide.com/products.html ... and be assured of our thanks!

Would you like to be informed when this page is updated?
(Some of you had signed up in the past, but netmind.com seems to have disappeared. This is a new notification page)

There is no obligation ... the only effect is to send you an email when this page is updated.
(Of course, many inside pages are also updated each month.)

It would be a kindness if you'd take a moment and let me know who you are and what interests you have. If you can share some information, or even a picture, that would be great! Just use the address below. Thanks. (Please note: Due to the huge amount of spam on the internet, it would be extremely helpful if you would use something like [Oldradio] in your subject line, so the filters don't get in the way.)

An important note about this resource:

We have used many sources, including FCC files, university lecturers, historical publications and more, and have tried to be as accurate as possible, not repeating many of the myths of the industry (such as the Uncle Don Story) nor histories "manufactured" by promotion departments. However, I am not perfect, and may well have overlooked something. If you do see an error or omission, please let me know.

The accuracy and expansion of this resource depend upon our SHARING our efforts.

  • If you can help, please share your materials or information.
  • Due to the huge amount of spam on the internet, please use something like [Oldradio] in your subject line.
