Trivial. Large establishments typically make their own single-phase power from so-called dry-type transformers with a 440-480 volt primary and 120-0-120 and/or 240-0-240 secondary windings. There may be several such transformers perhaps one for each phase. Some of the Hotel got its power from the phase that was off.

the 240 which allowed lights to be on in some rooms and outdoor lights in
some areas to work but the (I assume) 240 volt AC units not to function.
I post this because I'm wondering how a 3 phase transformer would have to be
wired to essentially feed the two halves of the 240 from more than a single
phase. Any thoughts on this?
