Another View of Master Control,
Radio City, San Francisco

Equipment Image

Engineer-in-Charge George Greaves trains another engineer on the Master Control panel at Radio City.

The operator here determined which studio program was fed to which broadcast phone line on the network. Fourteen different circuits could be fed simultaneously, judging by the number of VU meters along the top. All programs fed to KPO, KGO and the two networks originated here. The extensive audio patch panels on either side could be used to quickly substitute a failed studio amplifier in case of emergency. The telegraph sounder on the desk was used to communicate with the KPO transmitter in Belmont.

An important note about this resource:

We have used many sources, including FCC files, university lecturers, historical publications and more, and have tried to be as accurate as possible, not repeating many of the myths of the industry (such as the Uncle Don Story) nor histories "manufactured" by promotion departments. However, I am not perfect, and may well have overlooked something. If you do see an error or omission, please let me know.

The accuracy and expansion of this resource depend upon our SHARING our efforts.
