The first station in Italy was

Italy was one of the first European countries to "loosen the grip" on broadcasting by governments after a Supreme Court decision that wiped out the FM broadcast regulations, resulting in a race to build stations. After decades of essentially "one voice," the country now was exposed to many competing stations, some of whom interfered with one another. In recent years, it seems that many of the stations have been sold to larger corporations, and there has been a consolidation. In fact, some credit his broadcast empire for the recent election of the current Head of State in Italy.
