In 1974, Ron Jones founded Circuit Research Labs. A Phoenix radio engineer, Jones was not happy with the audio processing of the day. CRL became noted for equipment that produced "aggressive" processing on both AM or FM.
Sadly, Ron Jones died in 199x, and the company lost some of its drive. Eventually the company was purchased and, in 2000, CRL purchased Orban, leading to a de-emphasis on the CRL brand.
